Fashion Trivia

History of Handbags

Ever wonder who invented handbags? Like many things we use every day we never stop to think about the history behind them. I was surprise that the origin of handbags goes back over 5000 years and that the first users were men not women. The bags at that time were used for the same reasons they are today,  to carry valuables and products to attend to personal hygiene and comfort. In those early years a leather pouch, a form of bag, was looped through girdles or belts almost like today's fanny packs. The ice man they found a few year back in a glacier had a leather belt pouch.  In the Middle Ages handbags continue to develop by the use of different material. Some of the most common wool, straw, cotton, linen, fur, silk, gauzes, brocades, velvets, satin, gold and silver. Materials like Silk, gold and silver were reserved for the wealthy.  The most common material for the poor would have been wool. As  fashion continued to develop cloth became less baggy and form fitting as the years went by and handbags / purses / wallets became more important as pockets on clothing was reduced. In the 1950's  we saw new materials like Lucite and Bakelite and the designer houses like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Hermes began to receive more attention and with the rise of the middle class in America and their spending power. The 1960's marked the beginning of the youth culture. Called baby boomers they were much more fashion aware and had the disposable income to spend on it.  This consumer demand brought  new designer labels into the market like Kate Spade, Gucci, Coach, Burberry, and Dior. New materials like micro fiber, plastics, nylon, straw, suede, croco, croch, cotton, canvas, breads,  brocade, and leather-like material entered the market place. Styles expanded to include totes, clutches, hobos, mini, satchels, bucket, short shoulder, long shoulder, flap shoulder, and slings. Designer handbags had developed into a way to show wealth and status. In the 80's & 90's vintage designer labels like Perlina,  Juicy, Fendi, and Vera Bradly were in such high demand that cheap replica handbag lines flooded the market. These discount "designer fakes" are hard to tell from the real designer bags but cost much less. You have to do your research on what the handbag should look like to be sure. Exact colors, seams, where the stamps in the leather are and what they look like and designer markings on the metal parts are some of the ways you can tell which is real. 100% authentic designer brand bags should always have handbag care cards, dust bag and possibly the original sales receipt if its used. Discount priced products from sellers in China, Korea and Singapore are not always but more likely to be fake / replica designer handbag. Example Louis Vuittion replica handbags,  replica coach handbag , replica chanel handbags , are very common and are sold online. What is in the future for handbags? It most likely will bring new materials and styles like the license plate and photo handbags. The authentic designer brands like Dior, Gucci, Hermes and Louis Vuitton handbags will continue be the top designers. Handbags will continue to be the top accent accessories.
